Hunting California Without the Red Tape

Hunting California Without the Red Tape
Questions and answers for hunting in California
Out-of-state hunters are often hesitant to book a trip to California because of the red tape, strict regulations, and travel logistics.
The good news? When you hunt with Frontera Big Game, California is one of the smoothest, most rewarding hunting destinations in the country. We handle the heavy lifting, the local bureaucracy, and the field logistics so you can focus entirely on your trophy Tule Elk or free-range Aoudad.
Here is everything a non-resident hunter needs to know about traveling to the Central Coast for the hunt of a lifetime.
Answers about Hunting In California for Out-of-State Hunters
California requires 100% lead-free ammunition for all hunting statewide. While this sounds restrictive, modern copper ballistics are actually an advantage for tough, big-bodied game like Tule Elk and heavy-shielded Aoudad rams.
CRITICAL TIP FOR NON-RESIDENTS: Do not plan to buy your ammunition when you land in California. Due to state background check laws, non-residents cannot easily purchase ammunition over the counter.
The Solution: Purchase your ammunition at home and fly with it. Per TSA guidelines, you can legally transport up to 11 pounds of ammunition in your checked luggage, provided it is securely packed in the original cardboard packaging or a plastic ammo box inside a locked, hard-sided container.
Our Recommendation: We highly recommend premium, high-weight-retention solid copper bullets such as the Barnes TTSX, Nosler E-Tip, or Hornady CX. These rounds retain nearly 100% of their weight, offering devastating penetration through heavy bone and brush.
Our primary base of operations is centered around the rugged and beautiful Central Coast region (near San Ardo and Paso Robles). Depending on your airline preference and budget, you have several excellent airport options:
Regional Airports (Closest & Easiest)
San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP): Located roughly 45 to 60 minutes from our hunting zones. This is the smoothest option for rental cars and bypassing major highway traffic.
Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT): Located about 1.5 to 2 hours away. A highly efficient airport with great rental truck options.
International Hubs (Best for Direct Flights)
San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC): A clean, straightforward 2-hour drive south down Highway 101 directly to our hunting grounds.
Los Angeles International (LAX) or San Francisco (SFO): Both are roughly 3 to 3.5 hours away. Ideal if you want to extend your trip into a coastal California vacation.
Whether you harvest a 700-pound Tule Elk bull or a heavy-chapped Barbary sheep, our job isn’t finished until your meat and trophy are secure. Because our Tule Elk hunts occur during the peak of the summer rut (July through September), speed is everything.
Expedited Field Care
We prioritize immediate cooling to prevent “bone sour” in the California heat. We skin, quarter, and prepare your animal in the field, moving the meat directly into temperature-controlled cooling units within hours of the harvest.
Processing & Shipping Options
-
The Airline Option: For Aoudad and smaller meat yields, many out-of-state hunters simply purchase heavy-duty coolers locally, pack the frozen meat with dry ice, and check the coolers as baggage on their flight home.
-
Cold Freight Shipping: For full Tule Elk meat yields, we coordinate with trusted local wild game processors. They will professionally cut, vacuum-seal, and flash-freeze your meat, which can then be shipped directly to your doorstep via specialized cold-freight carriers.
-
Taxidermy Shipping: We work hand-in-hand with premier, local third-party taxidermists. If you prefer not to travel with a raw cape and horns, they will properly prep, salt, log, and crate your trophy, shipping it directly to your local taxidermist back home once it is safe for transport.
Flying into California with a hunting rifle is completely legal and standardized under federal law.
-
TSA Regulations: Your rifle must be unloaded and encased in a locked, hard-sided gun case. You must declare the firearm at the ticketing counter when checking in.
-
No Registration Required: You do not need to register your hunting rifle with the state of California just to come on a guided hunt. As long as your firearm conforms to standard sporting rifle configurations (bolt-action, standard hunting rifles), you are completely clear.
