California Tule Elk Hunting

The Tule Elk tag is arguably the most coveted “once-in-a-lifetime” draw in California. For most premium zones like San Luis or Fort Hunter Liggett, the draw odds for a bull tag are often less than 1%. Because of these steep odds, many hunters choose to bypass the state draw and purchase PLM (Private Lands Management) tags. These tags allow you to hunt private ranches without using your state preference points, though they command a premium price due to their guaranteed nature.

Unlike Rocky Mountain Elk, the Tule Elk rut typically occurs much earlier, peak activity usually falling between late July and early September. Hunting during the rut is ideal as bulls are vocal and aggressive, making them easier to locate. If you are hunting San Luis Reservoir or the Central Coast units expect high temperatures; being prepared for meat recovery in 90°F+ weather is a critical part of a successful Tule Elk expedition.

A guide provides two essential advantages: pre-season scouting to locate trophy-class bulls and the specialized equipment (heavy-duty trailers, cooling units, and packing teams) necessary to move a 700lb animal off the marsh or out of steep coastal canyons in the summer heat.

A common fear is that 5 days isn’t enough time for such a rare tag. The reality is that for a guided hunt, 5 days is the “sweet spot.” Because we conduct pre-season scouting and maintain constant communication with ranch managers and biologists, we usually have eyes on the top 3–5 bulls in the unit before you even arrive. This allows us to bypass the “search” phase and go straight into the “stalk” phase on Day 1.

This is a constant debate in hunting communities. While Tule Elk are smaller than Rocky Mountain Elk (bulls average 500–700 lbs), they are notoriously “tough” and often hunted in high-wind coastal environments. We recommend .30 caliber or larger (e.g., .300 Win Mag, .30-06, or 7mm Mag). More important than the caliber is a high-weight-retention bullet like a Barnes TTSX or Nosler Partition to ensure a clean, ethical harvest in the thick brush often found in CA elk zones.

This is our #1 priority. Because Tule Elk are often hunted in 90°F+ weather, ‘bone sour’ is a real risk. We mitigate this by having a dedicated recovery plan for every hunt. Once an elk is down, we immediately skin and quarter the animal in the field to allow the meat to begin cooling. We utilize specialized pack teams and equipment to move the meat directly into temperature-controlled storage or high-end cooling units within hours of harvest. We also coordinate with local processors to ensure your trophy is handled professionally from field to freezer.
