La Panza Tule Elk Hunting — Guided Hunts for Zone 17 Draw Tag Holders

Zone 17 Is One of California's Most Coveted Elk Units.

Frontera Hunting

The La Panza zone covers a large swath of San Luis Obispo County — from the Pinnacles south toward the Carrizo Plains — and it’s earned its reputation. This unit consistently produces trophy-class tule elk bulls, and it’s one of the most sought-after draw tags in the state.

Most of the biggest animals live on private land. That’s where Frontera operates.

We have private land access inside Zone 17 and guide every La Panza hunt with the same pre-season scouting, terrain knowledge, and meat recovery infrastructure that makes us the go-to outfitter on California’s Central Coast.

La Panza Hunt Overview

5-day guided spot-and-stalk hunt on private La Panza ranchland.

Zone 17 terrain is defined by high-elevation ridges, deep canyons, and brushy draws. It’s legitimate spot-and-stalk country. Bulls here regularly score 275″–325″, with the best animals consistently holding on private ranch property away from hunting pressure.

What’s included:

  • Pre-season scouting — we have bulls located before you arrive
  • Transportation to and from the field each day
  • Field dressing and skinning
  • Snacks and drinks throughout the hunt
  • Taxidermy coordination and pickup/delivery arrangements
  • Adult ride-along guests welcome at $250/person — minors ride free

Private Land vs. Public Land in La Panza

Zone 17 includes public hunting areas — portions of Los Padres National Forest and Carrizo Plain National Monument are within the zone and open to draw tag holders. Public land hunting is a real option, but it comes with real tradeoffs: no pre-positioned scouting, elk pushed by competing hunters, and no logistics infrastructure for a 500 lb bull in summer heat.

Our private ranch access removes the variables. The biggest animals on the zone are on private land. You get access to them.

Frequently Asked Questions — La Panza Zone 17

Yes. La Panza has public hunting on Carrizo Plain National Monument and National Forest land. But the trophy-class animals — bulls scoring 300″+ — consistently come off private land. A guide with private access doesn’t just improve your odds. It changes the caliber of animal you have a realistic shot at.

La Panza is a mix of open grassland, high ridges, and deep canyon country. Hunters should be ready for moderate physical exertion (glassing from ridges and making stalks through brush) and canyon terrain. Have physical limitations? Tell us during planning. We’ll build a strategy around your capability.

Unlike Rocky Mountain elk, tule elk rut typically peaks from late July through early September. This is the best window because bulls are vocal, moving predictably, and responsive to calls. If your tag window extends into fall, contact us for current timing.

Book immediately when draw results are announced typically mid-June. Our private ranch slots are limited and the best dates go fast. Haven’t drawn yet? Reach out anyway — we’re happy to answer application strategy questions at no cost.

La Panza Draw Tag in Hand?

You've applied for years for this tag. Don't spend it on public land when private ranch access is available.
