Gabilan Tule Elk Hunting — Zone 14 Guide Service

The Gabilan Unit Is a Private-Land Puzzle. Frontera Knows How to Solve It.

Frontera Hunting

Zone 14 (the Gabilan) is one of the most complex tule elk units in California to hunt successfully. It spans portions of Monterey, San Benito, and Fresno counties, running from the Pacific coastline east through the Gabilan Range. The terrain is steep and rugged. The elk are almost entirely on private land.

That’s not a warning. That’s the opportunity.

When access and terrain create barriers for most hunters, those barriers become advantages for hunters with the right guide. Frontera navigates the private land relationships and boundary complexities of the Gabilan unit so you can focus on the hunt itself.

What a Zone 14 Guided Hunt Looks Like

5-day guided hunt on private Gabilan Zone ranchland.

The Gabilan terrain is legitimately challenging — steep, rugged, and physically demanding. CDFW describes it as “difficult to traverse.” This is not a walk-in-the-park hunt. It requires physical readiness and a guide who knows how elk move through this specific landscape.

Zone 14 hunts run in the fall (historically November), after the summer rut peak. Hunting strategy is patience and glassing over calling — locating animals in rugged terrain and executing a disciplined approach.

What’s included:

  • Pre-season scouting and private land access coordination
  • Transportation to and from the field each day
  • Field dressing and skinning
  • Snacks and drinks throughout the hunt
  • Taxidermy coordination and pickup/delivery arrangements
  • Adult ride-along guests welcome at $250/person — minors ride free

What CDFW Says About Zone 14 and Why It Matters

This is worth knowing before you apply: the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s official Gabilan hunt overview states that elk in Zone 14 are found almost exclusively on private property and that substantial access fees are likely. CDFW also notes it does not maintain a list of landowners who offer access.

That means a Gabilan tag holder without pre-arranged private land access is hunting a zone where the elk live on ground they can’t legally enter. A guide with established ranch relationships doesn’t just improve your odds — in Zone 14, it’s what makes the hunt possible.

Frontera has those relationships.

Drawing a Gabilan Tule Elk Tag

Applications open April 15. Deadline: midnight June 2 — every year.

Apply through CDFW’s Online License Service or any CDFW license agent. Preference points build every year you apply but don’t draw. The Gabilan unit’s private-land complexity means draw tag holders who don’t secure guide access before their season opens are at a serious disadvantage — contact us as soon as draw results are announced.

Note: All Gabilan tag holders are required to attend a mandatory hunter orientation before hunting. You’ll be notified of the time and location upon receipt of your tag.

Frequently Asked Questions — Gabilan Zone 14

Because CDFW’s own official hunt materials state that elk in Zone 14 are found almost exclusively on private property, and that substantial access fees are likely. CDFW does not maintain a list of landowners who allow hunting access. That means a draw tag holder without prior arrangements is hunting a zone where most of the elk population lives on ground they can’t legally access. Frontera’s private ranch relationships solve this problem before your hunt begins.

Yes. CDFW describes Gabilan terrain as “steep, rugged topography that can be difficult to traverse.” Hunters should be physically prepared for challenging hillside and canyon country. If you have health or mobility concerns, contact us before booking — we’ll be straight with you about what this zone requires.

All Zone 14 elk tag holders are required by CDFW to attend a mandatory orientation before hunting. You’ll receive time and location details when your tag is issued. Frontera can walk you through what to expect from the orientation in advance.

Zone 14 hunts run in November — after the tule elk rut peak of late July through early September. This is a patience hunt: less calling, more glassing, more reading terrain. Frontera’s pre-season scouting means we know where bulls are holding before you arrive, which matters even more when calling tactics are less effective.
