What to Expect on Your California Aoudad Hunt
Hunting Aoudad (Barbary sheep) is often compared to a hybrid of hunting wild sheep, goats, and elk. They are incredibly wary, exceptionally tough, and possess some of the best eyesight of any big game animal in North America. When you book a guided Aoudad hunt with Frontera Hunting, here is what you need to know.
The Terrain & Hunt Style
Our free-range Aoudad hunts take place on over 10,000 acres of privately owned ranch land along California’s scenic Central Coast. You will be hunting rugged coastal mountain ranges and deep canyons that offer spectacular views.
Because this is a 100% free-range herd, they move quickly across the landscape. This is a true spot-and-stalk hunt. Expect to spend a significant amount of time glassing ridges, rock outcroppings, and grassy pockets to locate the herds. Once a mature ram is spotted, you and your guides will use the terrain to plan a stealthy approach, keeping the wind in your favor to outsmart their elite-level vision.
Trophy Quality Aoudad
The Central Coast boasts a healthy population of mature Barbary sheep. On a typical hunt, hunters can expect to see rams with impressive horn lengths ranging from 27 to over 30 inches, with heavy bases and the classic “chaps-like” mane on their chest and front legs. A mature Aoudad ram in this region will typically weigh between 200 and 250 pounds. Harvesting a 28-inch-plus ram is considered an excellent trophy, and our guides work tirelessly to put you on the biggest rams the ranch has to offer.
Recommended Gear & Equipment
Aoudad are notoriously tough animals that can absorb marginal hits, making accuracy and the right gear paramount to a successful hunt.
-
Rifle Calibers: We recommend flat-shooting calibers capable of delivering solid knockdown power at 200+ yards. Excellent choices include 6.5 PRC, .270 Win, 7mm Rem Mag, .300 Win Mag, or .30-06.
-
Ammunition: Please note that California requires lead-free (copper) ammunition. Choose a high-quality, controlled-expansion solid copper bullet (like Barnes TTSX or Hornady CX).
-
Optics: High-quality binoculars (10×42 or 12×50) are essential for this hunt. Your guides will carry high-powered spotting scopes, but you are welcome to bring your own.
-
Footwear: Bring sturdy, broken-in mountain hunting boots with excellent grip for navigating steep, rocky terrain.
-
Accessories: A reliable rangefinder and a lightweight bipod or set of shooting sticks are highly recommended to ensure a steady rest for longer shots.
FAQ: Guided Aoudad Hunting in California
No. Because Aoudad (Barbary sheep) are considered a non-native species in California, you do not need a hunting license, state tag, or to enter a draw when pursuing them on private land. This makes it one of the most accessible big game hunts in the state, allowing you to skip application fees and years of building preference points.
We currently maintain a 100% success rate. Our hunters typically glass between 20 and 80 free-range Aoudad over the course of their trip. While most of our hunters successfully harvest their ram on the very first day, we provide a full 3-day guided experience to ensure you have the best possible opportunity.
Our guided hunts are strictly free-range. We operate across more than 10,000 acres of privately owned ranch land on California’s Central Coast. These are wild Barbary sheep navigating rugged, natural terrain, offering hunters an authentic, challenging spot-and-stalk experience.
Our prime Aoudad hunting season runs from August through November. During these months, the herds are active and predictable. We occasionally offer hunts outside of this primary window based on the location of the herds, but availability is limited.
You can expect average shot distances around 200 yards, though the expansive terrain means longer shots are certainly possible. We recommend bringing flat-shooting calibers (.300 Win Mag, 6.5 PRC, etc.) and high-quality optics. Once the animal is down, your guides will handle the skinning, mount care, and walk-in meat preservation.
